Gunite is a form of concrete (shot-crete). The build process of a Gunite Pool includes digging a hole to the design’s shape, size & dimensions, followed by plumbing & any electrical requirements. Next, a framework of steel bars (rebar) is laid & constructed inside the hole to provide a structural skeleton for the pool. After the rebar is securely laid throughout the pool hole, it is time to apply the gunite. Gunite is essentially a mixture of sand, cement & water, & it is applied by spraying the mixture. After the gunite has been sprayed & the process of curing/drying has taken place, the final touches can be made such as tiles & cosmetics.
Though the build process is more complex & time-consuming in comparison to other pool types such as Fiberglass Pools, Vinyl Liner Pools or Insulated pools, there are benefits to a Gunite Pool that are unique. The pool being built from scratch allows the flexibility & creativity to have a truly customized pool, designed to best-capture your dream oasis! See more info about the process below, and how we do it here at Leo’s Lagoons!

Design and Permitting: First, design the pool according to preferences and local regulations, then obtain the necessary permits.
Excavation: The designated area for the pool is dug out to the required shape and depth.
Plumbing and Electrical: Install the necessary plumbing for water circulation and electrical systems for lighting and equipment.
Rebar Framework: A framework of steel reinforcing bars (rebar) is constructed in the excavated hole to provide structural strength.
Gunite Application: Gunite, a mixture of cement, sand, and water, is sprayed over the rebar framework under high pressure to form a thick, sturdy pool shell.
Curing: The gunite needs to cure for a while, typically a week or so, during which it must be kept moist to ensure proper strength.
Tile and Coping: Install coping around the pool edge and tile along the waterline, if desired.
Decking: Construct the decking around the pool, which can be made from various materials like concrete, pavers, or wood.
Interior Finish: Apply the finish to the pool’s interior surface, such as plaster, pebble, or fiberglass.
Filling and Start-up: Fill the pool with water and start up the pumps and filtration systems to begin the chemical balancing and cleaning process.
